DoNotify vs OpenAI Dots
OpenAI Dots are always-on agents that keep working between your conversations, with their own cloud computer and browser. That makes them far more capable than a chatbot, and it sharpens an old question: when your agent finds something urgent while you are away from your screen, how does it actually reach you?
| Feature | DoNotify | OpenAI Dots |
|---|---|---|
| Reaches you by | A real phone call | ChatGPT, Slack or Teams message |
| Interrupts, rather than waiting to be read | Yes | No |
| Works on a landline | Yes | No |
| Can remind someone else | Yes, calls their number | No, it is your agent |
| Works on its own in the background | Scheduled calls only | Yes, continuously |
| General task work | No | Yes, research, code, admin |
| Price | Free tier, then from $7.50/mo | Pro and Business Premium tiers |
| Best for | The reminder that must land | Ongoing background work |
What Dots are good at
A dot takes ongoing responsibility for something and keeps making progress without being prompted. It has its own cloud computer and browser, connects to thousands of apps, and learns how you like things done. For work that spans days rather than minutes, that is a real step beyond asking a chatbot a question.
Where a phone call still wins
Every channel a dot speaks through, ChatGPT, Slack, Teams, is one you have to go and look at. That is fine for a summary at the end of the day. It is the wrong shape for "your flight moved and you need to leave now".
A ringing phone is the only channel that interrupts. That is occasionally irritating and exactly why it works when the cost of missing something is real.
The always-on part makes this sharper, not softer
An assistant you have to open can only tell you things while you are looking at it. An agent that works around the clock will, sooner or later, find something important at 4pm on a Friday while you are driving. The more capable the agent gets, the more the last step matters: getting the human's attention.
The person you need to reach may not be you
Your dot is yours, on your account, inside your ChatGPT. It cannot ring your father about his tablets or a patient who has never heard of it. DoNotify calls a number, so the person on the other end needs no app, no account and no subscription, and a landline works fine.
Where Dots fit better
For nearly everything else. If you want an agent that books the travel, chases the invoice and keeps a project moving while you sleep, that is not what DoNotify does and never will be. We do one thing: make sure a specific reminder reaches a specific person at a specific time.
The bottom line
These are not really competitors, and the best setup uses both. Let your dot do the work, and give it a phone line for the moments a message will not do. The OpenAI Dots setup guide covers connecting the two, and the phone call API for AI agents has the endpoints.
