Google Calendar Notifications Not Working? Work Through These 9 Causes

When Google Calendar notifications stop arriving, the frustrating part is that nothing looks broken. The events are there. The reminders are set. The app opens fine. Something silently swallowed the alert and gave you no indication which layer it happened in.

There are nine realistic causes and they are worth checking in roughly this order, because the common ones are near the top and the tedious ones are near the bottom.

1. Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode is on

This is the most common cause by a wide margin, and the most easily missed because Focus modes can turn themselves on by schedule, location, or when you open certain apps.

Check: On iPhone, Settings then Focus, and look at every mode, not just the one currently active. On Android, Settings then Notifications then Do Not Disturb, and check the schedules tab.

Fix: Add Google Calendar to the allowed apps for each Focus mode you actually use. Turning DND off once fixes today and nothing else.

2. Notifications are off for the Calendar app specifically

System-level notification permission is separate from anything inside Calendar. An OS update or a "reduce interruptions" prompt can flip it without much ceremony.

Check: iPhone, Settings then Notifications then Google Calendar. Android, Settings then Apps then Calendar then Notifications.

Fix: Allow notifications, and confirm the individual channels are on too. Android splits Calendar into several channels and reminders can be muted while other channels stay on, which looks exactly like a broken app.

3. The event has no reminder on it

Default reminders apply to events you create. They frequently do not apply to events created by someone else and accepted by you, or to events imported from another system.

Check: Open a specific event that failed and look at its notification row rather than trusting the calendar's defaults.

Fix: Set the reminder on that event. To change the default for future events, go to Settings, choose the specific calendar in the left sidebar, then Event notifications. That default is per-calendar, not per-account, which surprises most people.

4. You are looking at a different account

Multiple Google accounts on one device is the single most confusing cause on this list, because everything appears correct in the account you happen to be viewing.

Check: In the Calendar app, open the menu and look at which calendars are ticked and which account each belongs to. A work event on a personal-account view is invisible and silent.

Fix: Enable the calendar under the right account. On Android also check Settings then Accounts, and confirm Calendar sync is enabled for that account specifically.

5. Calendar sync is off at the account level

Distinct from the app's own notification settings, and it fails quietly. The app shows a cached copy of your calendar and never learns about new events.

Check: Android, Settings then Accounts then your Google account then Account sync, and look for Calendar. iPhone, Settings then Calendar then Accounts.

Fix: Turn sync on. If it was already on, toggle it off and back on, which forces a resync and clears a surprising number of stuck states.

6. Battery optimisation is killing the app in the background

Mostly an Android problem, and worst on manufacturer skins that ship aggressive battery managers. The app gets frozen in the background and cannot fire its scheduled alert.

Check: Settings then Apps then Calendar then Battery.

Fix: Set it to Unrestricted. On Samsung, also remove Calendar from Sleeping apps under Device care then Battery then Background usage limits.

7. Notifications are set to "Email" instead of "Notification"

Each reminder has a type, and email reminders do not make your phone do anything. If you changed a default months ago, every event created since inherited it.

Check: Open an event and look at the dropdown next to the reminder time.

Fix: Switch it to Notification. Fix the calendar default too, or you will do this again next week.

8. Browser notifications were never granted

Applies if you rely on Calendar in a desktop browser. Chrome blocks notification prompts by default in some configurations, so you may never have seen the request.

Check: The padlock icon in the address bar on calendar.google.com, then Notifications.

Fix: Set it to Allow. Also confirm your operating system is not suppressing Chrome's notifications, and note that desktop alerts only fire while the browser is running.

9. The timezone on the event is not the one you are in

The reminder fires perfectly, just not when you expected. Common after travel, and common with events created by people in other regions.

Check: Open the event and look at its timezone, then check Settings then Timezone for your primary calendar.

Fix: Turn on "Ask to update primary timezone" so travel does not silently shift everything, and set the timezone explicitly on events that must happen at a fixed local time.

When you have fixed all nine and still miss things

At some point it stops being a configuration problem.
